Bogus "Freedom of Information" agencies
Police Authorities and the Information Commissioner are aware that a number of bogus Data Protection and Freedom of Information enforcement agencies are operating in the UK, and the Information Commissioner is taking steps against these organisations.
If you receive correspondence from an agency demanding that you register with them in order to comply with Data Protection or Freedom of Information legislation, report it to the Information Commissioner's Office on 01625 545740.
Most of these agencies will also demand substantial fees for their services.
The Information Commissioner makes available the company's name and address when he receives a complaint from a member of the public. You can find a list of these 'bogus agencies' on the Information Commissioner's Office website.
